THE UP-PICKING STYLE OF BANJO PLAYING is an impressive, yet easy method that enables you to play the banjo melody, chords, and bass notes, all at the same time. Pete Seeger made the up picking style famous, and it’s Pete’s record albums and books that led me to this wonderful style of playing. Here me play Under the Double Eagle, along with guitar backup, in the up-picking style. The guitar backup isn’t needed when playing in this style, but it will show you how well the style “gets along with” backup instruments.

UP-PICKING SOUNDS LIKE CLAWHAMMER: The up-picking style of playing sounds very much like the difficult to play clawhammer style. If you’ve had difficulty mastering the clawhammer style, give the up-picking style a go. You might find that playing the banjo in a complex and impressive way is easier than you thought!
